In the 19th century covered carriages were very popular with secretive couples seeking a place for illicit liaisons. Certain pieces of literature recommended such vehicles because the movement they produced, combined with bumps in the road, enhanced the experience for the participants. This particular use for carriages became so popular that in 1838 the London hackney cab commissioners unsuccessfully called for a ban on curtains and cushions to discourage couples from such immoral activities.
