Dr Joseph Bell was a lecturer at the medical school of the University of Edinburgh while Arthur Conan Doyle was a student. Bell was a pioneer of forensic science and provided Doyle with the inspiration for his character Sherlock Holmes. Bell testified at several criminal trials as a forensic expert, along with his assistant a Dr Watson, whose first name was not John but Heron.
